Microsuction or Irrigation - What to Choose?

We offer both a modern and safe 'Irrigation' technique or 'Microsuctioning' for earwax removal. There are pros and cons to both techniques. Which to choose?

Our default choice and preference at Mahurangi Hearing is for Irrigation as this will remove wax quickly, efficiently and safely.

Microsuctioning is used if there are any contraindications to 'Irrigation' such as ear infection or ear perforation. Our experienced team of practitioners will inform you of the best solution for you.

If you've always had one method or the other and have a personal preference for this, then we are happy to accommodate your preference. Please advise in the comments section if you are wanting Microsuctioning as Irrigation is the default method.

Earwax Removal Preparation

Preparation is the same for both Microsuctioning or Irrigation. Please administer olive oil for 3-4 nights prior to the appointment. Place a few drops in each ear (both ears even if only one feels blocked) and lie on the other side for 5-10 minutes to let it absorb.

Costs of Earwax Removal - $65

In the vast majority of cases we are able to remove the wax from both ears in one appointment

However, if it has been many years since you last had earwax removal or if the wax is particularly hard or buried very deeply, it may require a second or even third appointment. Subsequent appointments are $50

If there is no wax present then a booking fee of $35 will apply.
